"Gary's Greatest Hit"

Yesterday I was driving to Utah with a 7 students to Challenge conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. We left the Boulder area about 6:30 Am and were cruising along at great pace. It was a beautiful morning and all the students were hanging out and connecting in the van.

Then the entire day changed, I was cruising along about 72 mph and then out of the corner of my eye I saw this blur, it actually was a couple of blurs... It happened so fast one moment everything was great the next it felt like I hit a brink wall. From the left had side of the road two deers hopped out on the interstate. There I was minding my own business and a suicide deer jumped out in the middle of the road wanting to get hit.
I praise God that I didn't see it earlier because I probably would have done something stupid like swerve in a 15 passenger van at plus 70. That would have been a flipped the entire van. But God was sovereign and only allowed me to caught a glimpse of the deer right before we hit it. A girl sitting in the back said she started to scream, but I didn't hear her because I was so focused on hitting the dear as square on as I could so that the van would stay the course and not roll over.

So at 72 mph we smacked, demolished and collided with the deer. Now this is what I remember...We hit the deer head on with the majority of the body smacking into the front driver side of the car, David the student sitting next to me says that the deers head flopped onto the windshield with its tongue sticking out and its neck acting like a dangling noodle. After that moment the hood of the van flipped up so that we could see the road or the deer at this point. I could tell that the deer was still on the van for what seemed like a 1/2 mile, but was probably only 50 yards, then the deer went to the ground and the front driver wheel went over the deer's body followed by the back passenger side wheel which felt like a giant speed bump. There is still question in the van if we actually hit a deer, some debate it might have been an elk. Anyways it was the largest deer I have ever seen. Then after what seemed like 5 minutes we slowed down enough for the hood to fall back into place.
As I pulled over to the side all I could see was half the deer's body in the left lane and the other half in the right lane with two legs sticking straight up in the air.
We continued on to the next off ramp which was about a mile away and pulled into the gas station to see the damage the van took. I which I would have stopped on the highway to see what actually happened, but I was so thankful that no one was hurt and I didn't want to be struck on the interstate with seven students. But I did take a few pictures of the van and the carnage of the accident.

Psalm 23

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,

he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.

Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.

I love this Psalm. I am so excited for this Sunday as Thomas and Stephen are going to share what God has been teaching them about what it means to have a God is acts like a shepherd.

I could go on and on about how this Psalm has ministered to me, I would love to hear what words or phrases encourage you in Psalm23. E-mail me at gary@calvarybible.com with the way the Word speaks to your heart.

Psalm 34

I sought the LORD, and he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears.

Psalm 34:4

Taste and see that the LORD is good;

blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.
Psalm 34:8

The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them;

he delivers them from all their troubles.

Psalm 34:17

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted

and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Psalm 34:18

These verses minister to me when I am hurting.
It is so good to know that the Lord is a place if refuge.
Take some time and ponder the promise of God.

Where do you turn in times of trouble?

What verses minister to you when you are hurting?

Psalm 24

One thing that I really get excited about is when artist writes songs using the Word of God to guide the lyrics of a song. Chris Tomlin uses Psalm 24 to write Give Us Clean Hands. Go to youtube and search Give Us Clean Hands and watch and listen to the videos that have been created.

How does this passage relate to the Chillin' n Grillin' series we are doing on Wednesday nights? What value to you put on personal holiness? Do you have clean hands? Are you conforming more to the likeness of Christ?

Take a few minutes today and ask the Lord to reveal areas of your life that need to be cleaned? Pray this passage back to the Lord today and allow him to speak to you,

Who may ascend the hill of the LORD ? Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false.

Psalm 24:3-4

Psalm 27

One thing I ask of the LORD,
this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to seek him in his temple.

What a great verse to meditate on...Ask yourself a couple of questions today?

If you had one wsh of the Lord what would it be and why?

Do you desire to dwell in the houe of the Lord?
Do you desire to gaze on the beauty of the Lord?
Why or why not?

Why do you think David desires to be in the presence of the Lord?
Do you long for Heaven? Do you long to worship Jesus?

When David writes I want to dwell in the house of the Lord forever, when does it start?
When was the last time you connected with the Lord in a deep way?

I will praise you

I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart;
I will tell of all your wonders.
Psalm 9:1

Make a list of the wonders of God and take a few minutes today to praise him with all your heart. As I was reading this verse today I couldn't get past the open verse. It took me a while to think of the God of wonders?

Psalm 8:1

O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
above the heavens.

Sorry it has been awhile since I have posted, but I loved reading this passage this morning. God has truly made himself known through the creation of the world. If you want to go further in the Word today read Psalm 19:1-4 and Romans 1:16-21.

How has Lord made himself known through creation?
What ways has God made himself known to you?

The Lord Laugh's (Psalm 2)

Why do the nations conspire
and the peoples plot in vain?

The kings of the earth take their stand
and the rulers gather together
against the LORD
and against his Anointed One.

"Let us break their chains," they say,
"and throw off their fetters."

The One enthroned in heaven laughs;
the Lord scoffs at them.

Then he rebukes them in his anger
and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,

"I have installed my King
on Zion, my holy hill."

How would your life be different if you truly believe God is always in control?
Read Psalm 2, the Lord laughs at those who plan against him, I love that our King is sovereign over all things. We worship a King that will never be defeated!!!
